The Yagara language program was first established in 2021 at the Leichhardt State School in Doolma (Ipswich). We started teaching the grade 5 and 6 classes, replacing the Language Other Than English (LOTE). We also have a Traditional Custodian class of Yagara, Jagera and Ugarapul jarjums (children) from all grades.
Our program expanded in 2022 with the introduction of Goodna State School grade 5s and 6s in term 4 2022. This was followed by Bellbird Park State Secondary College grade 7s in term 1 2023 then the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Independent School (all grades) in term 4 2023.
We also teach Yagara Language as an elective for senior students at The Y Vocational Learning Centre in Doolma.
We have 6 Yagara language teachers, who are teacher learners. We are blessed to be able to revive our language through learning and teaching in the schools, while being supported by the educators at the schools we work with.
We are hoping to launch a community language program soon which will be open to the wider community who want to learn Yagara language. We hope that our work in the schools will help support a culturally respectful and capable generation of all Australians living on Yagara Country.
We also provide Yagara translation services, if you are seeking signage or naming in Yagara language.
